YOUNG MAORI DROWNED
CANOE CAPSIZES ON WAIKATO RIVER CAMPANION SWIMS ASHORE (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE. Saturday. A young Maori, Jack Hapi, aged 23, of Mercer, was drowned in the Waikato River near Mercer yesterday when his canoe capsized. Hapi and another native set out to cross the river about 12.45 p.m., about a mile below the Mercer Wharf. A heavy wind made the surface of the water choppy, and when out in the stream the canoe capsized. Hapi’s companion struck out fojr the bank and managed to reach it, but Hapi clung to the unturned canoe. His plight was noticed from the Mercer Wharf, and one of the Roose Shipping Company’s launches, in charge of Mr. J. Waller, set out to his rescue, but before the canoe was reached, the man had disappeared. Dragging operations have been in hand to-day, but so far the body has not been recovered. In the locality of the accident the bottom of the river is very uneven, and the depth of the water varies from sft to 30ft. making dragging difficult.
