Rear Reflectors

New Regulations will Make Many Useless Motorists will be tired of reading notes on this subject, but the whole question has again come into prominence through yet another Government regulation. These supplementary regulations were issued in the New Zealand Gazette, No. 70, of September 20, and the section provides as follows: The rear reflector must be set perpendicularly, must reflect at a distance of 150 feet, and be set so as to reflect directly to the source of light, any light coming from an angle of 40 degrees either side of normal. Referring to this question, the “Radiator,” the official organ of the Motor Traders' Association, says: “We hoped that ere this the Government, would have realised the wisdom of cancelling this particular regulation, which we consider quite unnecessary. “The subject is now likely to come into greater prominence, as amended regulations have been gazetted making the requirements under this particular regulation more definite and exacting. “In consequence a very large percentage of the reflectors which have been attached to motor vehicles by their owners are valueless, as they do not comply with the amended regulai tion, which comes into operation on October 1. | “In the aggregate a large sum of | money, running into many thousands of pounds, has been spent by moto’rists in an honest attempt to comply with a regulation which they do not con- j sider necessary. On a moderate estimate at least half this money is absolutely wasted, as the majority of i reflectors in use must be scrapped, and replaced by those which will comply with the amended regulation. “The average motorist is a longsuffering and law-abiding man, but we think that even he will turn when he realises that although his car is fitted with a rear reflector, it does not comply with the regulations and further expense and trouble is ahead of him. “We are rather surprised that organised motorists have not made a more emphatic protest to the Government against such an irritating and unnecessary regulation.”
