OUTSIDERS LAND DOUBLE AT GISBORNE

OTHON AND HUIKAI MEETING A BIG SUCCESS (Special to THE SLX j GISBORNE. Saturday. Interest in ' the jockeys’ premiership duel was continued to-day, the con- | eluding day’s racing of the Gisborne i Racing Club’s winter meeting, but | when Green punched Abisogne home a winner in the second race he practically made his position impregnable, being two up on Reed. The latter could nut get home lirst on any single occasion, but A. E. Ellis improved his position by riding another winner, making his own score for the meeting threat but he was in a practically hopei less position so far as the premieri ship was concerned. j The racing was again keen, and the ! attendance much better than usual, for : the Gisborne folk soon recovered from the shock administered to them by Gene Tunney via Tom Keeney. The totalisator handled £15,062, against £12,113 on the second day of the last winter gathering. For the meetingspeculation amounted to £26,761, compared with £21,379 last year, an increase of £ 5,352. These figures nearly approach those of the boom time following the Great War, and, together with, the record nomination and acceptance fees the club should be able to show a splendid and much needed profit. . Rebuffs For Backers The well-backed Ballyfarnon, with Cohesion out of the way, had to be ridden out to beat two novices in the Hurdles, in Chrisna and Merle, the favourite. Patuki not going at all kindly. Dishonoured, a warm first fancy in the Trial, was beaten into third place, Abisogne finally winning easily from the disappointing Bold Front. Cool Card, of whom a good deal is thought locally, was the favourite in the principal fiat race, the Waikanae Handicap, and Ills supporters just gof out of a financial difficulty when he was placed second in a thrilling finish, with the second fancy, Wanderlust, close behind him. Othon was the winner, and as he was the rank outsiderin a field of 10 he paid a glorious double-figure return. Othon put up a good performance, and there was no fluke about his success. False Favourite Despite the very poor showing he made on the first day, Royal Elm was selected by backers in the Second Hack Flat, and the loyal supporters ol' Singleton were therefore able to collect a good price. lie took charge in the run home to score handsomely from the little-fancied First Prince. It is not often that a dead-lieat is recorded in a cross-country, but the judge was unable to separate the two favourites, Master Arch and Handy, in the Te Hapara Steeplechase, the pair fighting out a neck and neck finish from the last fence, Comedy Prince being three lengths away third. The only favourite to score outright during the day was Pale Star, who got his neck in front of a couple of outsiders in Night Witch and King Willonyx in the Turanganui Handicap. Huikai’s Sprint The Farewell Handicap, like the bigger event earlier in the day, was it real facer for punters, for inree big outsiders filled uie places, the heavily - backed -runners—King Wang a, Dave -nu cooi Cara—nnisning aown tue course. liuikai, wao nad run unplaced earner in uie day, showed a vast improvement in lorm, lor, getting away smartly, he was always going like a winner, drawing away in me straight to win easily by a couple of lengths. Othon, who was mulcteu in a 71b penalty for his earlier success, again ran well, beating Superb King by a neck for second money.
