WHITTEN CRACKS CYCLE RECORD AT MANGERE

BEATS CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD GREAT UNPACED RIDE j The Manukat' Amateur Cycling Club's 22-mile time trial on Saturday • was responsible for an exceptionally j line performance by J. 'Whitten, who I not only established fastest time, but j broke the existing- record by lmin 20 !1-ssec. ■ The S 3 starters comprised the finest amateurs in Auckland, including J. H. .Wade (New Zealand champion), M. P. Byrnes, H. R. Dwight and F. J. Casey. The result came as a surprise to many followers of the game, but there were many who gave the winner'more than an outside chance. His performance stamps him as the finest unpaced rider seen in the Auckland Province for many years. I-lis time works out at an average speed of 23 miles an hour for the journey. Following are the times of the first four to finish: J. Whitten, sSmin 3S 4-ssee: J. PI. Wade, 59min 37 2-ssec; iM. P. Byrnes, 60min 56soc; H. R. Dwight, 61min 25sec. The result of the sealed handicap held in cnojunction with the above race is as follows: H. Russell. Smin, 1; W. Rowe, 6min. 2; D. H. Devlin. 6min, t 3: J. Whitten, 30sec. 4. ! Prizes for both races on Saturday ! were trophies donated by supporters j of the club ! FRANK PRIOR WINS AUCKLAND ROAD RACE | The Auckland Cycling Club held its j annual race to Papakura and back jon Saturday, and the result proved ! most satisfactory from every point of | view. The handicapping reflected the j greatest credit on Mr. S. Oakes, who got the field together about a mile from the finish, while the finish between F. Prior (scr) and F. Lowndes (4min) was a splendid one, only a length separating them. The following is the result:Frank Prior, scr. 1: F. Lowndes, 4min, 2: S. Hayes, scr. 3: K. Mathieson. 2min. 4. Time. Ihr 26min. Fastest time. F. Prior, scr. Ihr 3 6min 30see. The 17 starters were sent away well on time, but it was early evident that the usual good pacing work was not going to be indulged in by the fi-ont markers. This proved to be fatal to their chances, as the back men. riding well together, were within striking distance of the field at Otahuhu on the return journey. Pacing each other strongly. Prior. Hayes and Mathieson passed through going well, but still had a strong contingent out in front" headed by J. Henderson fwlio -was doing the lion's share of pacing) to catch. Passing through Mangere 300yds only separated the field. This was soon picked up. and a mile from the finish. Prior took the lead, drooping Haves and Mathieson. and going on won by a length from Lowndes, with Hayes 10 length? away third F. Prior, the winner, also won Mr. X. McQuilken’s special prize for fastest time. H? was congratuj lated on all sides for his fine ride
