MAHONEY’S £5,000
LABOUR SEAT SOLD BRIBERY SCANDAL (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY. Tuesday. In the report by the Royal Commissioner', Mr. Justice Scholes. on the charges of bribery in connection with changes in Federal Labour seats. Ins Honour expressed the opinion that the amount Mr. W. G. Mahoney received was probably £ 5,000. There was no evidence that Mr. F. Anstey, member for Bourke, was offered money to vacate his seat Mr. Mahony says he has in his possession an affidavit sworn by a South Australian solicitor, which supports his claim that he won a substantial sum when Spearfelt won the Melbourne Cup. The money with which he puicased his hotel was the result of these winnings. It is further asserted by Mr. Mahony that Mr. J. H. Scullin, Leader of the Federal Labour Party, deliberately suppressed the evidence that he had won the money at Flemington until after the Royal Commission had closed. This was done because he had always opposed Mr. Scullin. When he learned that the evidence was available, he was advised by his counsel that it was too late, as the commission had closed.
