BIRTLES EMBARRASSED

NATIVES MAKE PRESENT OF OVER-RIPE EGGS Mr. Francis Birtles. who recently drove by motor from London to Australia, told on arrival at Rangoon how he spent nearly a month in getting his car over the precipitous Kaga Hills in Burma. At first the wild hill tribes were suspicious, then interested, and finally friendly. Their friendliness took an embarrassing form, for they brought presents of prettily decorated baskets filled with eggs so long over-ripe that he could not use them. Mr. Birtles had to use ropes to lower his car over the steep precipices. In many parts there was no semblance of a road.
