TE AROHA’S TURN

FINE TROTTING CARD

KEEN SPORT ASSURED

PROBLEMS FOR PUNTERS

ff'HE club has made good progress JL since securing the totalisator permit in 1925, when the meeting was held in April- The next fixture took place in the same year—October—and the third was promoted in January of last ve ar. Each function was fraught with success and since its inception the country organisation has done a great deal to foster and popularise the pastime in its territory. PAST CUP WINNERS The first “tote” cup provided an interesting struggle, the winner being Buz Buz, who tramped 4.49. The minor places were filled by Heather Girl'and Reliance. The big heat at the next fixture was remarkable for the fact that the same three horses— Huz Buz, Heather Girl and Reliance, tilled the respective places again. The winner on this occasion traversed the two miles in 4.44 3-5. Last year Rock Hinton won the Te Aroha Cup in 4.42 i>-5, and followed this success up by annexing the Cambridge Cup the following month. The field for to-mor-row’s event is a strong one and includes several good two-milers, ‘with winning performances to their credit this season. v Excitement will commence to simmer when the gear is placed on the contestants for the

With the exception of three, the field will commence from the front, and it will be necessary to have two rows. A great deal will depend upon the draw for positions, while quick beginners will be invaluable on such an occasion. Several of the runners are engaged later in the afternoon, and this will perhaps be a puzzle to backers. A few that are capable of hooping out smartly are Great Eyre, Rosie Thorpe, Regret, Beauty Spot, Carnui, Money and Warspite, but some of them may be unlucky with the marbles. Marosa went a good saddle race at Whangarei but was stopping at the mile. Great Ballin has been in the picture of late, and his turn is due, while Bell Dial, who figures in three heats on the card, has received encouragement to face the starter in this go. BELL DIAL, if started, should be the elect, with GREAT BALLIN next, but in the former’s absence ROSIE THORPE may find favour. Next to parade will be the moderate hotters engaged in the ELSTOW HANDICAP

equal contest, but the handicanner has made it possible for the inexperienced or unsuccessful lot to get a slice of the stake. If Carwood will go right he should have a big say on the end, or if jjena Ansel trots as steadily as at Thames a portion of the prize would come her way. Elego is on the improve, and may be at home, and Nelson Girl should have made advancement since going to Te Awamutu. Lilydale did not materialise last month, but Peter Tracey would only require to do it right to lead in the; front lot. Those further back are solid trotters, but at the distance Billy Carbine looks the pick. BILLY CARBINE and PETER TRACEY may command most respect, but if Billy’s people wait for the longer heat, LENA ANSEL may have a good few friends.

THE ANNUAL FIXTURE OF THE POPUL4.It TP AROHA TROTTING CLUB WILL BE STAGED TO-MORROW. L V Li' Y ITEM PROMISES TO BE BRIMFUL OF INTEREST AND STIRRING CONTESTS CAN BE CONFIDENTLY LOOKED FORWARD TO. '

There will be an interesting field m the MA N AW ARU HA NDICAP Of £100; 2 miles. 4.50 limit. Willie Mack . Lt Speed King . . 12 Boston Chimes Lt Beil Tower . . 36 Bell Dial ... Lt Childe Audubon 36 Sebisca .... Lt Admiral Lock 36 „ . yds bhd Andover .... 48 Marionette . . 12 Gold Sound . . 48 Bell Dial holds excellent prospects off the front, but she may earn a penalty before this heat rolls round. Sebisca can trot a good race from the end, and Marionette is long overdue. Speed King ran * badly at New Plymouth, and except for one effort at Hawera, showed very poor form on the Wanganui-Hawera-Taranaki circuit. If Childe Audubon would take it on seriously he would make things interesting. Bell Tower is trying to come back and Admiral Lock must be taken on trust over the distance. Andover will have a big chance of success in this field, and Gold Sound will have a lot of admirers after his showing last month. GOLD SOUND may be the fancy, with BELL DIAL if reserved next in demand, but failing her ANDOVER will find favour. This will clear the way for the parade and preliminaries for the start of the

Five figure on the end of the handicap, of which lot Toll Chimes holds the best two-mile credentials, and if he gets anything like a good run may have a say in the finish. Three trotters in Peter McKinney, Mutu and Tamerlane are taking part, and if a square-gaiter is to take out the prize it will be the latter. Concertina, on her Thames showing, must not be overlooked, and if sh eis again in top key will take a power of beating. Bingen King is nicely placed and if he can see out the final pinch will be troublesome. Gold Dial could make it difficult for the opposition by deciding to leave the peg correctly, and on recent Hawera form Taipare should have it on Van Rich and Pitaroa. The grey has only to reproduce that effort to be in the money. Nelson Tasker is staying on and will be in the firing line at the finish, and Anseline is a possibility. Public opinion may lean toward CONCERTINA, TAIPARE and TAMERLANE. Another big card of novices will be geared up for the RUAKAKA HANDICAP

Great Eyre . . Lt Gold Cast ... 84 Eighteen start off the front, and again the draw and ability to commence promptly will prove a deciding factor. The Woods bracket, Edna. Thorpe and Beauty Spot, will find friends, and speedy beginners like Great Eyre, Single Mint and Nella Dillon will appeal to backers. Gaza can hop away like lightning and should soon be with the leaders, but will he see the last furlong out? Great Ballin if unlucky earlier will be handy. Money is well placed, and Charming Pronto if started will keep those in front going. Roamer and Gold Cast will be putting in solid work at the finish. WOODS BRACKET and GREAT EYRE will be sought after but GREAT BALLIN may be the actual favourite.

The next item to attract attention will be the HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP

Bell Dial again colours the card, but will surely have had enough by time. Haerenga Pai will no doubt see a short price off the end of the field, and Queen Betty must not be left out of consideration after Hawera. Horizon only requires to repeat his Thames harness effort and Garth Robertson would get his name on the honours list. TJrsuline could, if she would, and perhaps she will this time. The trotter Lackiewood will make no errors, and is sure to profit by the mistakes of some of the rest. Gold Sound may be penalised, and Lady Barrington will go a solid race and is in good trim. Then there is Cornelian, who can scamper a good 12 furlongs, and if she begins right will be handy at the final stage. HAERENGA PAI will be favoured, with HORIZON LI AN also in demand, and HORIZON if not reserved for later will have a good following. This will bring the square-gaiters once more into the limelight in the WAIHOU HANDICAP

Peter Tracey looks the most solid of the front rankers, and will have many friends, while Etta Cole’s admirers may feel inclined to give her another trial. If Billy Carbine fails to earn a penalty he will make this heat decidedly interesting, and so will Gold Star. The latter has gone some solid races of late and providing he can be kept to an even gait, it would take something to upend him. Bingen Starr has the pace and got into the money at New Plymouth, and may go one better at Te Aroha. Sebisca must prove dangerous and Appeal and Wild Nut look to be held safe by Floraline, who trotted a fine race at Thames. There will be good support for GOLD STAR, and FLORALINE, while SEBISCA will not be friendless. fine programme will be brought to finality with the popular heat of the day, the

There will be another big- field in this “recovery” stakes, and of the limit lot Gold Cast, Golden Grattan, Horizon and Charming Pronto all hold line prospects, and it would not be surprising to see this lot fight out the finish. Horizon may salute earlier, in which case he would have a. harder task set him. Huon Grattan is wellplaced near the front, and Blair Audubon is given a fine chance of picking up a prize. Liberate is a sound saddle merchant, and will cause the others plenty of anxiety, and Andover is sure to be cheeky. Concertina and Bingen King are engaged earlier and may not tackle this heat, and the same applies to Nelson Tasker. Ben Lomond is* overdue and Master Huia, if he gives another display like the last, will b© with them at the end of the section. In a good pool GOLD CAST and GOLDEN GRATTAN may be accorded most support, but BINGEN KING will go a merry mile. TROTTING FIXTURES April 21—Te Aroha T.C. April 21 —Ashburton T.C.
