Imperial Conference in 1930
ELECTIONS WILL CAUSE DELAY Dominion Representatives’ Work ACCORDING to Mr. L. S. Amery, Secretary of State for the Dominions, the next Imperial Conference will not be held before 1930. The delay, he explained, is due to coming general elections in Britain, South Africa and Australia.
By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. OTTAWA, Monday. “A supplementary change of personal communication” was the description given by Mr. L. S. Amery, Secretary of State for the Dominions, in a Press interview on the new post of British representative in Canada. Asked If there was a possibility of setting up a diplomatic service with-
in the Empire, Mr. Amery said that the term “diplomacy” opened up ambiguities in Imperialism. The new posts were more like liaison work and unlike limited discussions between foreign Powers. It was a question of convenience for each Dominion as to who would fill the positions and what rank the representatives would hold. Mr. Amery saw no difficulty in holding the Imperial Conference anywhere In the Empire. He favoured a conference every three years. An election seemed probable In Britain this year, and in South Africa and Australia next year. It was difficult to see if a Conference would be possible In 1929; the probable date would be 1930.—A. and N.Z.
