ACROSS STORMY STRAIT TO MAINLAND HOSPITAL

BUSH-WORKER’S DEATH Press Association. INVERCARGILL, To-day. George Richard Wilkinson, whose skull was fractured by a falling branch of a tree while working at a sawmill on Stewart Island, died in hospital without regaining consciousness. Deceased, who was 43 years of age, leaves a widow and a young family. After the accident on Friday he was carried for several miles through the bush before a conveyance was secured to take him to the settlement at Half Moon Bay. Although a westerly gale was blowing, some of the island residents manned a small coastal schooner and, at 7 p.m., started for the mainland. After a boisterous voyage the vessel reached Bluff at 10 p.m.
