HAWERA CLUB
POSITION GOOD another permit wanted tribute TO HANDICAPPER At the annual meeting of the Hawera Trotting Club, which was one of the most enthusiastic held since the inauguration of that body, the president, Mr. B. McCarthy, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, recently referred to in THE SUN, said the position was one for congratulation. SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE With a credit balance of £214 5s Id the accounts could be regarded as satisfactory, considering the financial stress during the year, the stakes being increased by £230, and also that the club suffered a loss of £ 200 on a pay-out on the totalisator. The totalizator decline was common to most clubs throughout the Dominion. The meetings were held in fine weather, the sport proving popular and the club receiving excellent support from the public. Last year they inaugurated a smoke concert for trainers and owners which was also a success. THE JOLLY MILLER Referring to the Government taxation of £2.958 7s Bd. the chairman trusted that some reduction would be made in the near future. Otherwise many clubs would have to go out of commission. The membership was now 126, and he hoped for an increase to enable the membership to carry the overhead expenses of the club. Assets of the club were £4,000 and he considered they were a safe and sound investment.
IMPROVING THE COURSE In reply to an inquiry, the president explained that under the agreement between the Trotting Club and the Egmont Racing Club, the former paid a rental of £l5O a trotting day for the use of the course and, in addition, the racing club benefited to the extent of *250 for expenditure on improvement
t 0 the course, which amount the trotling club was able to claim as rebate in respect of totalisator taxation. This "as subject to review in the event of any change of the incidence of taxation.
This led Mr. J. R. Corrigan to sugS**t that the committee recommend racing club to devote a portion of to is amount passed over as rebate on totalisator taxation to the purpose of *ncing the trotting track. The presistated that representation had already been made and the matter *ould subsequently come up for discussion by the committee. AN EXTRA PERMIT Reference was made to the question ?: Retiring an additional permit. Mr. ••ccarthy said the Hawera Club had application for another permit. ■ nd x P r fssed the hope that its efforts ful -! s diction would prove successn* \' are .
