FIREPLACE EXPLOSIONS
’PONSONBY HOUSE SHAKEN OCCUPANTS UNINJURED Two explosions occurred in a fireplace at the home of Mr. Francis Quinn, Norfolk Street, Ponsonby, on Saturday evening, but no one was injured and no damage was done. Mr. Quinn was seated alone in front of the fire when there was an explosion, followed immediately by another. Ashes and coals were strewn about the room, which was filled with a thick black smoke. The house shook as a result of the explosions and Mrs. Quinn and her daughters thought that there had been an earthquake. Two similar explosions occurred in Wellington recently, and it was suggested that they might have been caused by the presence of explosives left in the coal. As Mr. Quinn was in the habit of placing large pieces of coal on the fire it is thought that the explosions may have been caused by a pocket of gas. The secretary of the Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., Mr. J. Fotheringham, said last evening that every precaution was taken at the mines. Miners did not fire the blasting shots, special men being employed for that work. All explosives taken into the mine, had to be accounted for, and. a careful check was kept.
