DISTANCE RUNNER FOR AUSTRALIA

SAVIDAN MAY GO A.A.A. AND C. CLUB’S EFFORT The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle t Club is making an effort to send J. W. Savidan, New Zealand cross-country champion, to Australia to represent the Dominion at the Australasian cross-country championships to be held in Adelaide on August 6. The Auckland Centre has opened a fund to pay Savidan’s passage, but it will not be able to stand all expenses. The New Zealand Council •Will be asked to give its authority for the scheme, and to assist financially. If sufficient financial support is forthcoming Savidan will leave for Australia on July 19 or 20. NO PLAYING AREA The new Grammar School at the >Jorth Shore is just about completed, so far as the building is concerned, but the scholars have not yet been provided with playing fields. The area set apart for the use of the girls is so wet and muddy that the headmaster will not permit them to use it. The boys have a rough and ready football field, inches deep in mud. while a few hockey enthusiasts find recreation in a corner about 20 yards square. At present an extensive system of surface water drainage is being installed as it has been found that a surprising quantity of water is draining on to the school grounds from the adjacent higher land. For lack of playing space the boys have to while away their time yarning with the drainage workers. The main approach to the school Is along a series of planks laid in the mud from the drainage operations. The Board of Governors has a scheme for remodelling the grounds, but as yet has no funds. The plans provide for levelling off some acres of land and forming a semi-circular driveway turning in from either end of the main road (Lake Road) frontage of the school grounds. The estimated cost is about £3,oo(fc A committee of citizens is now being formed to help the board both by bringing the needs of the school before the Department of Education, and by collecting money to help pay for the needed improvements.
