Athletic Sports at the Domain

ELLIOT STILL UNBEATEN WATT WINS STEEPLECHASE In a steady drizzle, which later turned to heavy rain, the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club held the eighth meeting of its winter series of competitions on the Outer Domain on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the weather, however, an enthusiastic band of competitors turned out, and several interesting events were decided. Interest in the steeplechase was heightened by the presence of three of the members of the Auckland crosscountry team which went South to the Dominion meeting last Saturday. N. F. Cooper, the other member of the team, did not run on account of a cold, and although the Dominion champion. J. W. Savidan, started, he pulled out at the end of the first round. Evidently he had not recovered from the previous week’s strenuous race. ELLIOT UNBEATEN By winning the 75 yards handicap. A. J. Elliot once again demonstrated his superiority. His remarkable finishes are becoming proverbial. In Saturday’s final he was two 3 r ards behind Roper 20 yards from the tape, but finished so strongly that he won by inches. With a-quarter of a yard more than usual, Roper could not beat him. • T. A. Buckley, who ran into third place in the first heat, was a yard behind Roper in the final. Results:— 75 YARDS HANDICAP First Heat A. J. Elliot (scr.) 1 H. S. Roper (33yds) 2 T. A. Buckley (7*£j'ds) 3 Ten started. Time, 8 l-ssec. Won by inches, with inches between second and third. Elliot (scr.) .. 1 H. S. Roper (33yds) 2 T. A. Buckley (7£yds) 3 Six started. At the half-way mark Roper was leading, but Elliot caught him up in the last ten yards, and won by a touch, with Buckley a yard away third. Time 81sec. STEEPLECHASE About two miles. W. Watt (115 sec), 11min 44 2-ssec .. 1 E- P- Henshall (70see), llmin. 50 3-ssec 2 G. Gilchrist (60sec), llmin.' 59sec . . 3 A. Clark (135 sec), 12mjn. 1 l-ssec .. 4 C. Kells (scr), 12min 13sec 6 At the end of the first round, Clark was leading, followed by Watt, Gilchrist and Menshall, with the scratch men Savidan and Kells, running together in last place. The former ran off the track here—evidently not feeling too fit after six and a-quarter miles of the Cashmere Hills. The second time round the flag saw Clark still leading, with Watt a close second and Henshall in third place. Kells was still bringing up the rear. Early in the last lap Watt took the lead and eventually won by 15 yards from Henshall, with Gilchrist third and Kells sixth. The latter finished strongly, but could not come within range of the leaders. Twelve started and eight finished. PUTTING THE SHOT W. E. Eizzard, 30ft lin 1 Capt. Congden, 29ft 9in 2 W.
