MAORIS’ PETITIONS

FISHING RIGHTS IN GULF \ LAND AT MANGERE C THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Recognition of fishing rights to pipi and oyster beds in the Hauraki Gulf, from the mouth of the Piako to Taramaimuku, a distance of two miles from the sea, is asked for in a petition to Parliament from seven Maoris. A claim to certain lands at Mangere is made by Te Paea Paro, a Maori widow who is a granddaughter of Mrs. Matiri Toha, who secured the grant of certain lands there in 1867. When Toha wished to give her a life interest in the new land, absolute conveyance was made out by a solicitor, and the mistake never rectified.
