TOUCHING REUNION

DUCHESS AND BABY LONG SEPARATION ENDED British Wireless. — Copyright. RUGBY, Monday. Shortly after the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of York at Buckingham Palace, where the crowd outside delightfully cheered, there was an intimate personal touch in the appearance of their Majesties and the Duke and Duchess on the balcony, the Duchess carrying the baby Princess. The King and Queen and the Princes took a shorter route to the Palace, but the Duke and Duchess had readily agreed to make more formal progress by way of Whitehall and the Mall. While the sympathies of the people throughout the Empire have been with the Duchess in her long separation from her baby, Betty, it was an overjoyed Duke who was the first to take the baby into his arms and hug her. "Mother, how she has grown,” was the Duke’s excited remark. As the Duchess entered the drawing room at Buckingham Palace and saw Betty sitting on a rug on the floor playing with some toys, she exclaimed: “How sweet and lovely she is.” The Duke picked up the Princess, kissed her, and handed her to the Duchess. It was a most touching reunion. Betty took it all in good part and seemed intensely amused at the fuss of the arrival. She cooed and laughed and held a Court of her own. A large crowd of women waited in the rain outside the Palace. They were thrilled to see the Duchess clasping her baby on the balcony. When the Duke and Duchess returned to their new home in Piccadilly, hundreds of people in the street insistently called for the reappearance of Betty. A servant brought a rug and placed it over the railings. Then the Duchess appeared holding Betty, regardless of the raindrops. “Wave your hand, baby,” the Duchess was heard to say as she took a tiny hand in hers and raised it. The Duchess then turned and handed the baby through the window. Their Royal Highnesses stood for a moment to acknowledge the cheering before they vanished into their new home.—A. and N.Z.
