LEVY FOR ONERAHI ROAD

Following upon the decision reached by the Oneralii Town Board relative to maintenance of the road between Onerahi and Whangarei, a conference took place yesterday morning in the Whangarei County Chambers between Mr. J. E. Holmes, chairman of the Town Board, Mr. L. Webb, chairman of the Whangarei County Council, Cr. L. A. Johnson, member for Manaia riding, Mr. H. C. Hemphill, county clerk, and Mr. Allan Bell, M.P. The proposal discussed was to ask local bodies affected to adopt a scheme similar to that of the Hutt Road maintenance and construction in the Wellington Province. Vehicles licensed in Whangarei borough and county would provide £4,000 a year under the scheme and, if subsidised by the Main Highways Board on, say, a three to one basis, it would provide £ 16,000, or, alternatively, an amount sufficient to pay interest and sinking fund on a’loan of £50,000 for maintenance and construction of all such roads as were agreed upon, including the Whangarei to Auckland main highway. The proposal was discussed at length and Mr. Allan Bell promised to assist the local bodies, who are to bo communicated with.
