Stones on the Railway Line
TIMARU SMASH FINDING OF BOARD (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Prime Minister to-day mad public the findings of the departmenta inquiry board into the derailment of the Christchurch-Invercargill near Timaru on June 4. No evidence was found of any defect in the engine or track, which might have contributed to the derailment. The speed of the train was not excessive. On examination a crushed stone was found on the head of bot! rails where the leading wheels o the engine first mounted the rai: and fragments of freshly-brokei stone were found lying on the ba! last nearby. The Prime Minister feels justified accepting as the only possible cone sion the board’s opinion that the d railment was due to stones having bee placed on the rails. He pointed ou other cases of stones being placed on the line near to where this accident occurred.
