HIS NEW SHAKO
DRUNK FOOTS THE BILL STRUGGLE WITH A CONSTABLE In the days when shakos were first worn anyone who tried to damage one was usually sabred for his pains. Times have changed since then, however, and the penalty nowadays is less severe. Nels Jordon, aged 26, was too drunk to be allowed to remain at large yesterday afternoon. Constable Wilson proceeded to put him into a taxi to convey him to the Police Station. Jordon refused to submit quietly and in the struggle that ensued the constable’s shako, “‘valued at 15s 2d, the property of the New Zealand Government,” was crushed beyond recognition. In the Police Court this morning the young man was fined £1 10s on the two charges, and ordered to buy the constable a new shako.
