SET-BACK FOR FRANCE

ECONOMIC CONFERENCE PROPOSAL REJECTED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright GENEVA, Saturday. It is learned in official circles that the French proposal to establish an autonomous permanent economic organisation is not likely to be approved by the Economic Conference. The French delegates have searchingly canvassed the other delegations, but have not been assured of sufficient support to justify seeking a vote at the conference. This is a serious blow to French aspirations, as many of the resolutions they submitted to the various committees included a number of subjects outside the scope of the present conference. The French had hoped that these would be referred to the suggested bureau to form a programme of the work for what would be another costly and unwieldy organisation, armed with extensive powers and likely to menace the free conduct of commerce and industry.—A. and N.Z.
