BOMBS AND BULLETS
WILD ELECTION DAYHEAVY RIOTING IN CHICAGO MACHINE GUNS RAKE STREETS By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright CHICAGO, Tuesday. Mr. "William Thompson, Republican, was elected Mayor of Chicago by a majority of 50,000 votes over those given for his opponent, Mr. W. E. Dever, Democrat, the late mayor. There was unprecedented rioting, and machine-guns and bombs were used freely, both by the police and by the rival factions. Soon after the polls opened two buildings were bombed and the precinct headquarters were fired upon. The ho©ie of a State senator was raked with machine-gun bullets. Two election officials were kidnapped and 100 “gangsters” were arrested. All the votes in the 21st ward were burned. Lighted matches were ■ropned into the ballot boxes. A bomb wrecked a brick barn, in which the Democratic ward headquarters were situated. The effective organisation of the police prevented more serious riots and deaths. Mr. Thompson’s supporters have begun a wild celebration, which the police fear will result in additional outbreaks of violence. —A. and N.Z.
