GO SLOW

PICKING THE EASTER GOING MAY UPSET CALCULATIONS The unsettled weather of the past few weeks has interfered with training at Ellerslie, and local horses have not been able to indulge in as much fast work perhaps as their owners would have lifted. Unless the weather picks up soon, the going at Easter will be on the soft side and that being the case, then farewell to Reremoana’s chances of completing the hat trick in the rich mile handicap. The Hallowmas gelding has a sufficiently difficult task in front of him to carry 10.2 and head a big on a dry track; with the going on the soft side his task would apnear to be almost an impossible one. Early peckers who have taken Reremoana on their side as the first “leg” will have good cause to be more than a little concerned at the fate of their little investment, but then the “takers” mList be used to taking the early but fruitless plunge with the object of securing the lareer odds. In the event of the course being soft on Easter Saturday, it would not come as a surprise to find that the top weight has been left in his box, for he is too good a horse to risk even in such a race with so much weight aboard. The chestnut is not the onlv one who is likely to fail in bad ground. There is another hailing from within range of the same locality, and that is the Elysian mare Civility, who is without doubt one of the fastest gallopers in the Dominion. She cannot liit out on anything but a dry track. High Pitch, who is conceded on all hands to be very well in, strikes one as a likely sort, no matter what the conditions, and as he has the necessary brilliance, it would come as no surprise to learn that he has been “set” for this event, for his connections dearly lo.ve a coiip. Hipo is another who should be able to handle the going. There are others, too, but more of these anon. In the meantime, with conditions so unsettled, the taihoa policy appears to be the correct one to be adopted by the early birds after the good odds. SOUTHLAND MEETING CUP TO FULL SWING
