STOCK VALUES

PRICES AT WESTFIELD PORK FIRMER A shorter yarding of beef and a rather heavier yarding of sheep, as compared with last week, faced buyers at Westfield yesterday. Pigs came forward in lesser numbers and prices firmed accordingly. Competition was good for the greater part of the sale, though interest waned towards the close. CATTLE Best quality beasts were being sought after at values slightly in advance of last week’s quotations. Inferior lots were not in great demand. There was an average yarding of mostly good quality calves, but competition was not spirited and prices were even lower than last week. Prices in the cattle pens ranged as follow: Extra heavy prime steers made from £ll 10s to £l2 10s: heavy prime steers, £lO to £ll 7s 6d: prime, £ 9 to £9 17s 6d; light. £8 to £8 17s 6d: small and unfinished, £5 10s to £7. Extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £7 to £7 17s 6d: heavy, £5 15s to £6 17s 6d; lighter sorts, £4 10s to £5 12s 6d: just killable inferior sorts, £ 3 to £4 7s 6d. Runners made £1 16s to £2 14s; heavy vealers. £2 to £3 4s; medium, £ 1 3s to £2; light. £ 1 to £1 ss; rough and plain, 7s to 12s; small and fresh dropped, 3s to 18s. SHEEP Sheep were penned in larger numbers than last week, but prices held practically at late quotations with an easing tendency towards the close of the sale. quality of the yarding was not as good as last week, the sheep being smaller and, on the average, not so well finished. A wellfinished line of wethers made £ 1 6s 6d; prime wethers made from £1 3s to £1 4s 3d; prime, £1 Is to £1 2s 6d: light and small, 17s to 20s 6d. Few pens made over 235. Extra prime heavy ewes made up to 19s 9d; heavy prime, 15s to 17s; prime, 14s to 15s 9d: lighter killable sorts, 12s 6d to 13s 9d. Lambs, though mostly carrying good skins, could have been better finished, and there were few extra prime pens. The top price for a pen of choice prime lambs was £1 3s 9d; prime lambs made from 20s 6d to 22s 3d; seconds, 18s to 20s 3d; inferior sorts, 14s to 17s 9d. A small yarding of store sheep and lambs was disposed of at the conclusion of the fat stock sale at values allowing little room for profit, prices in some cases being within Is or 2s of the fat pen quotations. PIGS A small yarding of good quality pigs drew greater competition and there was a general hardening in prices, which ranged as follows: —Heavy baconers made up to £3 13s: medium, £3 5s to £3 8s; light, £ 3 2s to £3 4s; heavy porkers, £2 16s to £3 Is; medium, £2 12s to £2 15s; light, £2 6s to £2 10s; small and unfinished. £1 19s to £2 ss; small stores, £1 15s; weaners, 6s to 15s.
