RUGBY OPENING DAY

RADIO AT GROUNDS MAY DECREASE. “GATE” At a meeting- of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union, held last night, a letter was received from the Radio Broadcasting Company requesting that nermission be given them to broadcast from the grounds, on occasions of representative and other special matches, a progress of the game. “It would be very beneficial to those people who live out of Auckland," said the chairman, Mr. Frost, when making reference to the letter. Other merobers, in expressing their opinions, stated that although no doubt the country people would be benefited, many of those in the city would take the advantage of the radio, and in consequence the takings at the gate would decrease. After further discussion, it was decided to defer the matter until a later date. CANADIAN SOCCER TOUR In regard to the proposed tour of the Canadian soccer team, a letter was received asking- the union to refrain from arranging Rugby matches on July on which date the fourth test match, Canada Zealand, is to take place. Owing to the numerous teams which it was anticipated would take part in the jupior Rugby competition, it was the feeling of the meeting that they could not stop these games. After considerable discussion, a decision was reached to the effect that a letter be forwarded to the soccer officials stating that the committee would endeavour to meet them in every way possible. CLUB COLOURS Owing to the numerous clubs which have been affiliated by the union this year, it was found necessary to select a colours sub-committee, who would deal with the various requests for certain colours in jerseys. It was hoped that this sub-committee would find it possible to make more distinct the colours of some of the senior clubs which took part in competitions last year. LOAN FOR OTAHUHU An application from the newlyformed Otahuhu Club for a grant of £75 from the union to assist them in the establishing of their grounds and training sheds was brought before the committee. Mr. Frost mentioned that the Otahuhu people had worked hard, and well deserved any assistance that the union could give them. Mr. Arnold, representing the Otahuhu Club, said that a loan of the money w-ould be suitable, and he was sure that his club W'ould later on be in a position to repay the amount. It was decided that the loan of £75 would be made, subject to the deeds of the property being submitted to the union’s honorary solicitor, in order that the union may be protected in all matters. OPENING DAY It was announced that senior Rugby would commence- in Auckland on April 30, the first Saturday after Faster. Entries of teams close, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20. Playing areas are to be the same as last year, with the addition of Grey Lynn Park, where one ground will be used for Rugby alone, and another will be at their disposal on alternate Saturdays. A letter was received from the Waikato Rugby Union stating that it was endeavouring to form a club at Ngaruawahia, which it was thought would be sufficiently strong to produce one senior and two junior teams. It was requested that some senior Auckland club should arrange a match with a Hamilton senior team, to be played at Ngaruawahia on April 23, as a start to the Rugby in that district. Mr. Courtney stated that this would be a good opportunity for an Auckland fifteen to get in form. It was decided that any Auckland club wishing to send their senior team on this visit could get in touch with the union, and the necessary arrangements would be made.
