IMPERTINENT OFFENCE
BOROUGH ENGINEER FINED (From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, To-day. Fred Walsh Butler, aged 53 years, borough engineer, married, with three children, was charged before Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., at the Waihi Cefurt yesterday afternoon with improper assault on a married woman. Complainant’s story was that she went to the borough office to get some disinfectant and while in the borough engineer’s office the engineer tickled her under the chin, asking for a kiss and remarking she was the whitest little woman he had ever met. He attempted further familiarities, even offering her money. The magistrate, with the approval of the police, reduced the charge to one of common assault.
Defendant denied the charge, stating that it was a case of blackmail. He admitted being under the influence of drink on the date of the alleged assault.
The magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £5, stated that it was a most impertinent and exasperating offence.
