A NARROW ESCAPE
ANGLERS NEARLY DROWNED WASHED INTO LAGOON Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Two anglers had a narrow escape from drowning at the mouth of the Rakaia River on Saturday. They were fishing with others on the spit between the sea and a lagoon formed by the backwater of the river. A heavy sea was running and an exceptionally large wave washed Mr. R. Carney off the spit into the lagoon. His brother, Mr. J. Carney, in attempting to rescue him, was also washed into the lagoon by another wave. Both men were in difficulties and were being drawn toward the mouth of the river by the current when they were rescued by a party of anglers who had been fishing on the spit some distance away. They were brought ashore in an exhausted condition.
