FRUIT AND PRODUCE VALUES BANANAS HARDENING There Was a good supply of most lines of fruit and produce at the City auction marts this morning and values were mostly on a par with late quotations. A healthy tone is registered for fruit. Stone fruits are finished for the season, but ample supplies of autumn fruits are coming forward. Grapes, especially, are over-supplied and selling on a weakening market. Tomatoes, apples and pears are still arriving from the South, the Hutt Valley in particular, and selling freely. Bananas are hardening and supplies threaten to be short for Easter, the next direct shipment not being expected till Easter Monday. Oranges and other Island fruits are in failsupply. Prices obtained for the most soughtafter fruits are: Cooking apples: First grade, 5s to 6s a case; second grade, 3s to 4s: Delicious, good. 5s to 7s; inferior, 3s to 4s; best Cox’s orange. 10s to 14s; other apples, 4s to ss. Pears: Louise Bon Jersey, Ss to 11s; other table varieties, 4s to ss; cooking. 3s 6d to 4s 6d. Figs: 3s to 4s a case of 181 b. Ripe bananas: 25s to 26s a case. Oranges: Californian navel, re-packed, 38s to 42s 6d. Grapes: Coleman No. 1, Is 6d to 2s a lb; medium, Is to Is 6d; Te Kauwhata, 9s to 10s 6d a 161 b crate. Passion fruit: A grade, 4s to 6s a case; B grade, 3s to 4s. Lemons, best, 10s to 14s; others, 6s to Bs. Tomatoes: A grade, 3s to 4s a 201 b case; inferior, Is 6d to 2s 6d. VEGETABLES The vegetable market is over-sup-plied with most lines and prices are consequently well in buyers’ favour. Prices are: Kumaras, 2s 6d to 4s a sugar sack; pumpkins, 3s to 6s a cwt.; cabbage. Is to 4s a sack; green peas, 5s to 10s a bag; beans, 2s 6d to 6s a bag: citron melons, 4s 6d to 6s a cwt.; lettuce, 2s to 4s a case; cabbage on benches, Is 6d to 3s a dozen; cauliflowers on benches, 3d to Is each; rock melons, Id to 9d each: rhubarb, Is 6d to 2s per dozen bundles; marrows, Is 6d to 2s 6d a dozen; carrots, parsnips, beets and turnips, 6d to Is a dozen bundles. OTHER PRODUCE Eggs are in short supply and prices are harder. Hens’ eggs are making up to 3s a dozen, and ducks’ up to 2s 9*d. Best separator butter is worth Is 2d a lb. Honey is in fair supply, selling at late rates. FISH. With the approach of winter, supplies of fish are not quite so plentiful, but the quality is good, and prices remain at late rates. Retail values to-day were: Smoked— Blue cod. Is 9d lb; srhnapper, lOd: mullet, 8d; terekehi, 6d: trevalli, Bd. Fresh.—Schnapper. 6d lb: liapuka Is; kingrftsh, lOd; mullet, 8d; moki.
