THE BLUE BONNET (Written for THE SUN.) When I get my new bonnet , my pretty blue bonnet, With wide satin ribbons tied under my chin, And pale blue forget-me-nots perching upon it, And- true lover's knots on it, outside and in; I'll go to see Granny , my darling „ dear Granny And I'll say to her, “ Granny, d'you like my new bonnet, With all the quaint thingummies planted upon it, And the lovely wide ribbon bow under my chin?" And Granny will say (she has said it before to me) “ It's just what a pretty new blue bonnet ought to be, But it has no great beauty, nor ever could win it, Without the delightful dear face that is in it." HELENA J . HENDERSON. THE ADMIRAL (Written for THE SUN) Before my eyes now dim, the grey world fades. Piercing the gathering mists alone I see Waiting far out Fate's flagship, while the shades Bear me yet sentient o'ver the silent sea. Farther than thoughts can think or we can pray. Rowed out with lambent oars through sighing wind; Farther than kindly deeds forgotten stray Or the unvaulted vagaries of mind — The Wheel of Evolution is unwound Unfurled the lazy banner in gs of Time, The flesh may die —it sinks beneath a mound. The soul fares forth adventurous and . sublime. Now it resigns Earth's register of man , His natural failings, every vain emprise : Notv may it fly both time and space to span And vision life with newly opened eyes. DUDLEY BU&HBY. Auckland
