REBEL OFFENSIVE.

AT SAN SEBASTIAN.

20,000 Men Marching On Toledo. LOYALISTS MOVE. Press Association —Copyright London, Sept. 1

The rebel offensive toward Madrid in which two columns aggregating 20,000 men are marching through the. province of Estremadura, is approaching Toledo. The Government admits the advance but is confident of stemming it. It is pouring in troops on the western side of Toledo.

The rebels while maintaining the pressure in San Sebastian to-day resumed intensive aerial bombing of Fort San Martial on the Trun front, to which the Government - retaliated by bombing the insurgent headquarters at Burgos. The' situation at Guadararma is still static. An English Red Cross Unit under Mr. Sinclair Loutit, and a-Scottish ambulance unit have reached Barcelona. The Portuguese Embassy has gone to Alicante from Madrid. The Spanish vice-consul at Paris and three Embassy secretaries have resigned. Police at Madrid to-day arrested a banker, Luts Muguir, and confiscated £1,500,000 of which he was trustee on behalf' of religious organisations. People's Tribunal Operative.

The people’s tribunal sitting in the model prison continues sentencing, to death or to Tong terms of imprisonment officers of the Carabanchel garrison outside the city who revolted. The German Embassy at Madrid is imperilled owing to the unreliability of the Red militia superseding the guard of regular police and troops. The Spanish Government, replying to a protest, says it is unqble to supply police because none are available. The Borsen Zeitung, Berlin, declares this is characteristic of the Government’s general situation.

The Manchester Guardian’s Paris correspondent reports that official circles describe Portugal’s attitude as intolerable, alleging that large quantities of war material, including tanks, have been shipped to the rebels via Lisbon in British and German ships. It is stated on the best authority that lately 160 Italian and German pilots have been attached to the rebels. The Italians are wearing tercio uniform and the Germans the white tunics of the Deutsche Lufthansa airline.
