After being chased by Constable J. L. Moore through Petoiie ; for some two miles late last nifeht, the driver of a stolen motor car just managed to elude arrest by jumping out of the car while it was in motion and escaping to a vacant section. He left In the car a young woman passenger, to whom he had ; offered a ride earlier in the evening. Constable Moore was patrolling Jackson - Street in the Vicinity of the Post Office shortly after 10 o’clock when he noticed a baby car which had been reported 'to; have been stolen from Victoria Street, Wellington, travelling toward the raf/.vay station. He hailed a passing car, driven by Mr Frank Thorhas, of Ludlam Crescent, Lower Hutt, and linmediately gave chase , • '■ V After being followed for about half a mile, the driver of stolen car realised that he was being pursued, and quickly accelerated. Arriving .at Te Punl Street, the car with the constable was drawing alongside when the small car swerved violently into Te Puni Street and hurried on to the Petone Esplanade, with the car containing the constable close behind. The whole chase 'took place at) a speed of about 45 miles an hour. The stolen car travelled as far as the Petpne railway crossing and then turned up the Hutt itoad, cornering at a' high speed. The driver gained some advantage by the reckless manner in which he negotiated the cor-, ner and about a mile further.up the road he suddenly swung left into Rlddler’s Crescent and, jumping from the moving car, disappeared in a vacant section. The stolen car continued until brought to a stop by running alongwooden fence. No damage was done to either the car. or the fence. The car was removed to the Petone Police Station, with the young woman still in it. Inquiries , are at present proceeding as to The identity of the driver.
