ROAD TO MILFORD
Construction to be Speeded Up NUMBER OF MEN DOUBLED Press Association.- Copyright. Invcrcargill, Sept. 8. The number of men engaged on the construction of the road to Milford through the Eglinton Valley is to be doubled almost immediately with a view to bringing the road up to the site of the proposed motor tunnel through Gertrude Saddle. In the meantime a survey of the tunnel is to be made so that the Public Works Department will be able to submit an estimate of the cost to Cabinet.
This information was given by the Postmaster-General, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, in an interview to-day. Mr. Hamilton is interested in the road both as a means of absorbing unemployed men and as an attraction to tourists. Arrangements would be made, he said, to increase the 52 or 53 men at present on the work to about 100. During the summer a survey would be made of the proposed tunnel, and estimates of the cost of construction would be made. The cutting of the tunnel would be dependent on the question of cost. If the construction of the tunnel proved feasible it would be advisable to have the road constructed to the pass, and the extra men would help to push that work forward.
