STRATFORD BOROUGH

Mayor and Councillors Installed INAUGURAL MEETING HELD Election of Committee The inaugural meeting of the new-ly-elected Stratford Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, presided, and there were also present: Crs. (Dr.) W. P. P. Gordon, R. F. Harkness, R. E. Carryer, R. R. Curtis, A. H. Nelson, J W. Crowe, A. H. -trotter, C. W. Speck and C. R. Finnerty. The Town Clert: (Mr. P. Skoglund) apologised for the absence of the exMayor (Mr. Percy Thomson) who, he said, was out of town. Otherwise ho would have been present to perform the installation. In expressing regret that Mr. Thomson was not present to perform the installation ceremony, Mr. McMillan said he wished to make some remarks in regard to the election. Firstly, it had rather a wonderful feature in that a florin had to be toased to decide the winner. "Mr. Thomson will be able to feel," continued Mr. McMillan, "that he has not been defeated, but rather that his scrutineer did not have the luck to call 'tails.' ' That was the sum total of the result of the election. I have been duly elected and installed as Mayor according to the law of the land, and we must abide by that. I wish," went on Mr. McMillan, "to congratulate the old councillors on their return and the new members of the Council on the support they received from the burgesses. It naturally followed that with 12 candidates three must go out. Those candidates who were defeated, however, put up quite a good fight and polled very well indeed, and I hope that the fact that ,ihey were not elected will not have any effect on their future actions in regard to offering their services again. I am sure old councillors will miss their old colleague, Mr. Davey, who was one of the three who were defeated. I trust we will have a happy and useful term of office. I sincerely trust too that any differences will .not cause any heartburnings and that our differences will be left at the Council table." In accordance with the custom of

appointing a deputy-mayor the candidate who polled highest at the election, Cr. Gordon, was elected to the position. On behalf of the Council, Cr. Gordon thanked the Mayor for his congratulations, and also extended his personal thanks for the confidence placed in him in appointing him J deputy-Mayor. It may have been j better, however, if 3ome more expeii- j enced councillor had been appointed. "In conclusion," he said, "I wish to thank your Worship again for your remarks, and I think I can offer you all the co-operation and help we can j give you." Committees Elected j. Council committees were appointed as follow: i Works Committee Crs. Finnerty, Trotter, Crowe, Nelson, Speck. Electricity Committee Crs. Harkness, Gordon, Curtis, Carrye.*. Finance Committee The Mayor, respective chairmen of electricity and works committees, Crs. Trotter and Gordon. Fire Brigade and Town Hall Crs. Crowe and Curtis. Cemetery Crs. Trotter and Crowe. Abattoirs Crs. Nelson and Curtis. Municipal Band Crs. Trotter and Carryer. Municipal Library Cr. Gordon. The Mayor and Cr. Nelson were appointed the Council's representatives on the Stratford Unemployment Board. It was resolved that a meeting of the Council be held on Monday, May 15. The Mayor gave notice of motion (to be dealt with at the next meeting) as follows: That all resolutions dealing with staff organisation, salaries and wages be rescinded. If the motion was car- -*.; ried, said Mr. McMillan, he would move that the Council immediately readjust staff organisation, salaries and wages. The meeting concluded after half an hour's duration.
