JEWS IN GERMANY
Effect of Persecution IMPRESSION IN STATES Press Association. —Copyright, London, April 12, —The Daily Herald says that Mr. Norman Davis’ outspoken remarks on Herr Hitler, tin Chancellor, and Baron von Ncurath Foreign Minister, regarding the Jewish persecution, are primary responsible for concessions to, Jewish lawyers.
Mr. Davis emphasised that the Jewish pogrom had caused a disastrous impression in the United States. He made it plain that the leading financiers in the United States, hitherto favourably disposed to Germany, would be adamant in their refusal to assist while the illtreatment of Jews continued.
Herr Schacht, president of the Reichs bank, at the same time intervened on behalf of the Jews.
The Daily Herald adds that German messages show that all pretence at the liberty of trade unions is being destroyed. Nazi police attended meetings to register disapproval of the decisions, and works councils which do not meet with Nazi approval have been asked to resign and will be replaced by Nazi nominees. Members refusing to resign v/ili bo arrested and kept in custody until they sign their resignations. The Nazis, apparently, are considering the replacement of trade unions by corporations on the Italian model.
