It was revealed recently, says the | Daily Mail, that the Fresh Meadow j Country! Club, uie, scene of the United Stales open championship, I was, placed under a heavy guard ol i police as the result of threats to de- j stroy all the greens, made by a gang ; from Boston, who have demanded { from Mr. Milton Hertz, chairman ol the championship committee, the i right to set up pari-mutuel machines j near the clubhouse. The gangsters offered to pay the j club a percentage on the daily play, j Mr. Hertz refused to discuss the proposition., ittnd 'was warned that steps would be taken to prevent the j championship from being held. Later j he wa's told by a man named McNeill ,■ that unless a certain, sum were paid i all the greens would be demolished. |
