PROSPECTING AT ALEXANDRA
( 5 MINERS DISAPPOINTED ALEXANDRA, July 18.—The Molyneux River has now fallen two feet at the Alexandra bridge since the gates were closed on July !t. The riyer has fallen considerably more in the narrow gorge between Alexandra and Roxburgh, but. has not yet reached a lower level than had been registered before the dam was erected, so that it has been practically impossible to work any virgin ground. The largest return heard of for (bo week was ioz. gained by two miners who have practically lived on the rivers all their lives. Others who have taken to •mining recently are becoming considerably down-hearted as a result of their unsuccessful efforts. The banks pay £3 17s per oz direct to miners, and the remainder when the gold has been sent to Melbourne. When the bonus is returned the price approximates £G JOn pev ounce.
