COUNCIL AND DOMAIN BOARD Necessary road signs are to be erected at St. Mary's School. * * * The town clerk's action in having the town clock insured agaihst earthquake risk was confirmed. * * * Mr. A. Bone, caretaker of the cemetery, reported that four burials were attended to during the month. * * * The cost of the formation on Miranda Street, which was completed on February 21, by relief workers, was £214. «■ * * The Mayor's action in asking that work be commenced on Mold Saddle was confirmed by the Borough Council last night. * * .* It was decided to ask the County Council to confer with the Borough Council on the question of heavy traffic fees.

The foreman, Mr. L. B. Davis, was instructed to have the watercourse across Portia Street South cleaned out by unemployed relief labour.

The council decided to support the reading committee of the Mangapurua Landing in its request to have the Valley Road constructed.

Compensation claims from W. P. Nirkwood and A. H. Hillock have been referred to the borough solicitors for advice.

Mr. G. Boleyn is to be advised that his request for access to section in Ariel Street South would be considered when he was prepared to build.

The overseer, Mr. L. B. Davis, reported that the motor mileage for the month was as follows: —No, 1, 525 miles, 43 gallons, 12.2 miles a gallon; No. 2, 483 miles, 37 gallons, 13.0 miles a gallon; No. 3, 408 miles,'so gallons, 8.0 miles a gallon.

The overseer, Mr. Davis, reported that work on the drainage extension is now practically complete.. The last of the mains were laid on February 26, and all the man except two have been put off. The two men will be required for about two weeks to complete some lamp holes, etc.

The Minister of Agriculture advised that the council's request to have the Crown sections lying between Ariel and Portia Streets South transferred to the council was being considered.

The revenue from electricity for January, with the amounts for* the corresponding month last year in par cnlhoses, was as follows:—Outstanding. £315 (£300); gross, £1,077 (£1,050); discount, £236 (£235); cash, £897 (£811), outstanding £250 (£310).

Mr. A. S. Martin, librarian, reported as follows: —Number of books issued tor the month, 1,849; returned for the month, 1,836; odd books issued, 6; Odd books returned, 8; new boks added, 40; new subscribers, 4; subscribers not renewing, 8; total number of subscribers, 220; subscriptions received, £l2 14s 9d.

The inspector, Mr. A. E. Savers re ported that three cases were heard cat the Magistrate's Court, two being for dangerous driving and one for noisy exhaust. Notices have been served on several ratepayers to clean out creeks on their properties, and also in connection with minor by-law matters. Several farmers were refusing to pay heavy traffic fees, and the inspector asked the council for a ruling on the matter.

Units of electricity purchased for February were 137,000, making 435,200 for the Quarter, as compared with 380,000 for the corresponding quarter of 1930. The peak for the quarter was 360, compared td 350 for 1930. Mr. H. Dixon, custodian of the Towh Hall, reported that there had been no bookings during the month. No stock had been impounded.

During February the bulk supply of electricity w-as very satisfactory until a stoppage took place at 10.15 p.m.. followed by a partial supply until 10 a.m. oil the 28th. On February 22, following a heavy gale, a short shutdown was necessary to enable a loose tail piece to be secured. No interruptions occurred on the low-tension side.
