BLIZZARD AND STORM. SUFFERING IN UNITIED STATES. CHICAGO, March 8;' The mid-winter drought, which was nation-wide in extent, and was doing serious injury to crops in diminishing the water supply of many communities, including such large cities as New York, was broken to-day when ram and snow fell widely over the entire country. Chicago suffered from t blizzard and gale, a foot of snow falling. All Illinois, lowa, Wisconsin and Michigan were similarly affected. The midwest grain belt especially .benefited by the snow and the lower v&lleys of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers benefited by heavy rain. The storm extended as far south as Texas and Louisania, where it also did considerable property damage. . , , The Federal Weather Bureau stated that the drought, however, had progressed to su<ch an extent that the .rrain areas must have at least a foot more rain in the next two months to restore the moisture to the subsoil and start the growing season properly. Tho Red Cross announced that during February it fed almost half a million persons more than in January in the drought-stricken areas covering £1 States. Two million persons are now receiving aid. Tho drought in many localities is of more than a year in duration.
