ECONOMIC SITUATION

GOVERNMENT’S DECISIONS V 'ANNOUNCEMENT POSTPONED. WELLINGTON", Feb. 5. With his time completely taken up on matters in connection with the earthquake, the Prime Minister, Hon. 6. W. Forbes, will not now be in a position to announce the measures the Government considers necessary to meet the country’s economic difficulties until next week. Mr Forbes had originally intended to make the Government’s proposals known either to-day or to-morrow, but ever since Tuesday’s calamity his sole attention, as well as that of his colleagues, has been concentrated on emergency relief measures and other matters they have to deal with as a result of the unexpected happening in Hawke’s Bay. Six of his colleagues are in the devastated areas and eral questions in connection with the statement have yet to be finalised. Mr Forbes said to-day, however, that he hoped to bo in a position to make it next week. /
