RACE FOR ARMAMENTS

ITALO-FRENCH ACTIVITY DEPARTURE FROM PRINCIPLE BRITAIN BEING OUTBUILT LONDON, Feb. 5. Replying to a question in the House of Commons by, Sir Frederick Hall, who asked if it was not a fact that Prance and Italy had increased their ship-building programme while we were reducing ours, Mr A. V. Alexander (First Lord of Admiralty) said that the Government was doing its best to get Prance and Italy to adhere to the principle of limitation. If we were unable to do so we would have to reconsider the position. Mr Alexander previously stated that the total tonnage under construction in the British Commonwealth of Nations was 46,145. The corresponding figure in France was 100,684 tons and Italy 100,777 excluding respectively 35,318 and 32,550 tons of vessel in the 1930 programme believed to be not yet ordered.
