PRINCE OF WALES.
PROMOTION IN THREE SERVICES. LONDON. The Prince of Wales lias become a vice-admiral in the Navy, a lieu-tenant-general in the Army, and ah! air-marshal in the Royal Air Force. In other days it was customary to give high rank in the Army and Navy to members of the Royal Family at a youthful age, but since the end of the Victorian era members of the Royal Family have been' expected to learn something of the duties of their position. The King was primarily a sailor, and as such went through various officer grades before becoming a rear-admiral in 1901, when he was 36, and a vice-admiral in 1903. The Duke of Connaught, oh the other hand, was always on the military side, starting an an ensign in 1868 and becoming a lieut.-general twenty years later, when he was 38,, The Duke of York lias always been in the Air Force, and was made group captain in 1921, a year before his brother. The Prince of Wales, although first a sailor (he joined as a midshipman in 1911), wa s later more intimately connected with the Army, becoming a second lieutenant Jin. August 1914, four days after the declaration of war, and reaching the rank of major in 1928, and colonel in 1919. He has, therefore, been a colonel for eleven years, and for the same period he lias held the parallel rank of captain in the Navy. It will be recalled that the Prince took the salute at the trooping the colour for the first time at the King’s Birthday parade thi s year, in place of the Duke of Connaught, who wo* ill, and who usually deputises for the King. This pointed to his promotion for it i s certain that in the future the Prince will have more and more to take the King's place on parades and other important occasions.
