MOTOR SPEED FIEND
DASHES ON TO FOOTPATH. AUCKLAND, April 12. A motor car dashing alon the footpath in Queen Street startled pedestrians last evening and a woman was knocked down and injured. After colliding with the buttress of n safety zone in Queen Street, between Fort Street and Shorthand Street, a small motor car proceeding from the direction of iho Post Office swung across the road, mounted the footpath, and knocked down Mrs Hilda Burgess, of Grey Lynn, who was standing near the edge of the footpath. Mrs- Burgess was thrown almost against the window of a tobacconist’s shop, and was taken t' hospital suffering from bruises and shock. The car did not stop. It continued along the footpath, missing several pedestrians by inches. At the intersection of Queen Street and Short,land Street, the ear left the footpath and shot into the road. A sailor who had to jump to escape being struck ran after the car and attempted to board it- The car. however, was by now travelling rapidly im Queen Street, and it, turned into Wyndham Street and was lost to sight. There were two young men and a girl in the car. The car struck the zone a glancing blow, and skidded straight across the’ road, grazing a verandah post, as it mounted the footpath.
