TOURIST BUSINESS

SUGGESTED ADVISORY BOARD. WELLINGTON, Dec/ 10. The suggested Advisory Board to conduct the tourist business of New Zealand, and drawn from representatives of the business community, is not likely to be set up until the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle) completes the intended amalgamation of the Tourist Department and and the Government Publicity Office.

'. The Board was to have been constituted of representatives from the accommodation interests, motor transport services, travel agencies, shipping firms and tourist and progress leagues. It would act in a consulting capacity with the Tourist Department, Publicity Department and Railway Department. At the same time it is recognised among the departments that some sort of unified contro! of the various activities of the country in respect of tourist and advertising would '. s of great benefit and it is considered that if private enterprise would ally itself with tho Government in this matter everyone would profit. The difficulty hitherto in such matters has been the question of finance. The shipping companies, for example, wish to do their own advertising, and other interests have lost interest in proposed unification of control when asked what they would be prepared to subscribe towards a common fund to handle tho whole business and embark upon systematic advertising. An impetus to the movement, however, is likely to come from attendance by a New Zealand representative of the'Pacific Conference, which has been called at Honolulu early next, year. Concerted action by the various Pacific countries for the purpose of controlling tourist traffic is contemplated by the conference and the aim will be to arrive at a basis of action in the matter. All-Pacific tours, of tho kind now performed by Am -iean luxury liners are a main item on the agenda paper.
