FIRST ESCAPE FROM ITALY'S DEVIL ISLAND

ANTI-FASCIST PRISONERS SWIM TO SMOKE. GUARDS DRINKING IN CAFES. (Received 12.50 p.m.) PARIS, August S. Details of the escape. of Roseli Lussu and Nitti, the anti-Fascists, from the penal island of Pipari, show that the escape was due to their splendid powers as swimmers. They contrived to reach the beach at night time, when most of the guards were drinking at the cafes. Fully clothed they swam to the mainland though searchlights were playing on the seashores. This is the first escape from Italy’s “Devil Island” recorded. There are four hundred guards on the island for the five hundred prisoners.—Australian Press Assn.
