Association —Copyright WELLINGTON, This Day.
The suggestion that a Fruit Research Committee should be set tip to investigate problems of cool storage for fruit and the temperatures at which fruit should be held while in transport were made by the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister in Charge of Scientific and Industrial Research, at the fruitgrowers' conference to-day. After dealing with the many problems involved, Mr Atmore spoke of the experiments carried out at the Cawthron Institute, which showed the possibilities ahead, and he suggested that a levy of a farthing a case might be made to provide the necessary funds. On a million casos this would produce about £IOOO, a-nd if subsidised by the Government would make £2OOO available. He urged growers to give consideration to a comprehensive scheme by which the fruit industry, in the present state of., its development, might derive the fullest possible assistance that scientific knowledge and resource could give.
