MOTORING INTERESTS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION/. ■ i FOCUSSING pp HEADLIGHTS. Mr 1 S, C. Tonks presided over the meeting of the committee of the South Taranaki Automobile Associar tion, held at Hawera last night. The secretary, Mr W.. G. Walkley,, reported that he had. attended a conference at Wellington between the Motor. Union and the Carriers’ Federation to discuss the question of heavy traffic fees. The conference had found it impossible to come to an agreement, the discussion showing that the interests of private car-own-ers and carriers were directly in conflict. The motor union had decided to take steps to counteract the carriers’ movements for the abolition of heavy traffic fees and had appointed Mr, Walkley to organise the union’s case. The report was received, members complimenting Mr Walkley on his appointment. In reply to the association’s letter urging upon local bodies the necessity for the enforcement of the regulations regarding the adjustments of headlights, the New Plymouth Borough Council wrote stating that the 'matter was receiving attention, and it hoped to see concerted action taken. The Eltham and Inglewood councils advised that they were considering the matter. V; Mr S. A. Ward reported that the Stratford Borough Council had given notice of its intention to proceed ■ against motorists whose headlights were not properly focussed. Messrs G. A. Carter and W. A. o’oal|Aghan were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the Motor Union to be held in Auckland on! July 18. Tlie meeting decided to send a remit to the annual meeting urging tlie necessity for action in regard to the adjustment of headlights.
