£25,000 FOR CHARITIES. WESLEYAN CHURCH POSITION, CAPETOWN. Mr Braniwell Butler, bookkeiejpelr, of Oudtshoorn, ivlio held Trigo in the Calcutta sweep and won £125,000, is a married man earning £2OO a year. H(9 worked as usual to-day. He. is a teetotaller, and a non-smooker. He resisted all offers to celebrate his good fortune, declaring, “With God's help, I will never break my pledge.” He is named after General Braniwell Booth. His intention is to invest £IOO,OOO for his wife and children. He will assist charities with the balance.
A- controversy is in full swing as to whether the Wesleyan Church, of which he is a member, should accept a big donation ini view of the declaration. of the Wesleyan / Conference banning games, of chance.
