Ladies Golf. The ladies golf match, which was to have been held yesterday was postponed. It will be held, weather permitting, on Monday.

Shoaling, instruction. The new boy s of the D., Coy cadets were exercised in .22 rifle shooting on the new range orS Thursday afternoon, and performed very creditably.

The Winter Show. The Stratford Racing Club has granted the Winter Show Committee the loan of certain equipment for use during th© Show, on the same terms as last year.

Success at Hawera. At the Hawera Show, Mr F. Weston, with Ids entries of Brown Leghorns, secured first award for utility hen, first awai’d for utility pullet and first award, North Island Championship and special (rose bowl) for best bird in the Leghorn section.

Quick Return. Mr O. Sheridan reported to the police last evening that his motor car, which was parked near the Pest Office, had been wrongfully removed. The 1 police immediately got to work, but were saved a lot of trouble by the ca.r being returned to where it was taken from about an hour later.

Disappointing. There was a disappointingly small attendance a£ the lecture given yesterday by Nurse Whiteside, of the Stratford dental clinic. However, Nurse Whiteside announced that she w r oul(l shortly give another lecture, and it is to be hoped that w r hen it is given parents wall turn up in betetr numbers.

Exteus|ve Operations. t Speaking at Nurse Whiteside’s lecture yesterday, Mr Elliott, inspector of dental clinics, stated that of the 300,000 children in New Zealand, 40,000 were being treated in dental clinics. At date there were 89 clinics and 54' sub-bases with ll'O I officers, while there were in hand applications for the establishment of 200 further clinics. J

Cadet Training. D. Coy cadets last night completed a week’s course of training in musketry, infantry and physical recreational duties., (They were inspected by the area officer and adjutant of tha Second Cadet Battalion, Lieut. Compulsory Stop Signs. Compulsory stop signs recently placed at railway crossings* were referred to by the chairman (Mr S. C. Tonks) at last night’s meeting of the committee of the South Taranaki Automobile Association. Mr Toups said that the signs were so close to the rails tfiat they were practically useless to motorists. Dr, Simmons remarked that the signs were too close to the road as well as to theline. It wais resolved to write to the Railway Department urging that the signs be more suitably placed. Road Dangers. At last night’s meeting of the committee of the South Taranaki Automobile Association, Mr S. A. Ward (Stratford) stated that numbers of motor lorries and cars ere travelling at night without lights. That evening a Stratford man returning from New Plymouth had met five nnlihted lorries. He also mentioned that lorries were carrying long poles without the necessary red light at the rear. The meeting decided to send a, circular letter to local bodies asking that stringent action he taken to check the evil.

Appeal to West Coasters. In connection with the meeting called by His Worship the Mayor for Monday night Messrs P. Skoglu'nd and £. C. Dunbar, two ex-resi-dents ot‘ the West Coast of the ‘South Island, have requested in our I advertising columns that all ( exI West Coasters who can possibly do so will attend the meeting.

Gaining Bill. At the recent meeting of the committee of the Stratford Racing Club a report was received from the Sports Protection League that up to the present the Government had not decided what assistance they would give to get amendments to the Gaming Bill passed, but that as soon as they had arrived at a definite understanding with the Minister they would devise further] The Astonished Stomach. No “pieces” or milk should be given to children between meals, said ■Nurse Whiteside yesterday, in explaining the importance of feeding in relation to the health of the teeth. Three good meals a day was ample, she said, but as things •now were it was quite common foi -people, before the body could dispose of the last meal, to place more food in their tired and astonished •stomachs.

A Serious Matter, Dental disease, said Nurse Whiteside, in the course of her lecture yesterday, was n D longer looked upon as the minor complaint it was' some years ago, both the medical and dental professions now regarding it as a very serious one, as it had such a large bearing on the general health and was s 0 closely associated with other diseases. It was known that 95 per cent, of school children are affected As an instance Nurse Whiteside quoted the case of one school in which 43 of the 44 children examined, of an average age of six needed attention, 137 fillings and 200 extractions being required.

Earthquake Relief Fund. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan) has called a public meeting for Monday night at 8 o’clock at the Borough Council Chambers for the purpose of discussing the , question of raising funds for the relief of sufferers by the recent earthquake. As the question of relief is a very important one the Mayoi is looking forward to a well attended meeting. There is no doubt of the sympathy that is being extended to the people of Murchison and surrounding districts, and Monday evening will give the Stratford people an opportunity, by their presence at the meeting, of demonstrate ing their sympathy in a practical manner.

Sale of a Tyre. Firestoife Service, Ltd., New Ply* mouth (Mr C. 35. Monaghan) claim, ed £l6 8s from E.. H., Eason., garage proprietor, Stratford, (Mr A. Coleman) in respect of th© sale, of a tyre for a motor truck. It was explained that the tyre,had been purchased by the defendant as a straight-put deal for a client, but it afterwards transpired that it wa s a matter of adjustment on account of a defective tyre. The adjustment was made, between the Firestonb Service, Ltd., and their principals (Hatrick and Co.) and the user of the tyre. For the dlefence it was submitted there had been a novation of the contract between* plaintiffs and defendant, as their selling agents, th© deal having heeifl put through over the head of defendant. Judgment was for the defendant, with costs, under the equity and good conscience clause i the magistrate saying that there, seemed to have been a muddle made by Hatrick and 00. over the heads, of the other parties.
