RIOTS IN CEYLON

POLICE HEADQUARTERS SET ON FIRE. WORKMEN SEEK REVENGE. (Received *l.lO p.m.) COLO ALB 0, Feb. 5.

Fojir were shot dead, a fire engine was partly gutted, and many rioters and police were injured during the course of a thrilling attempt by an infuriated crowd to set fire to Police Headquarters at Colombo. The attack is believed to have been quite an unauthorised attempt on the part of workmen to the city to revenge themselves upon the police for an alleged insult, and rumoured assault by a police officer upon their idolised leader Goonesinha, the president of the Ceylon labour union. The tramway strike which had been in piogress for ten days was temporarily called off to-day ponding negotiations. —lAu stral ian P. A.
