"STRATFORD EVENING POST” THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1928. A HIGH STANDARD.

THE lesson to legislators taught by last week’s election was not only that the country, tired of Reform Government, desired a change, but, also that it was weary, almost beyond endurance of tho mediocrity existing in the last Parliament, Not for many years has the House of Representatives , boasted of so many members incapable of thoroughly understanding, let alone effectively grappling with the big pro1, ems affecting the country. On© paper says it Was the very worst parlia--ment on record, and though perhaps that is too sweeping a. statement, it it is quite safe to say, that it was one of the very worst. Its performances were thoroughly unsatisfactory—even crude — and a perusual of Hansard Tor the. most part had the effect of making one. indignant at the. inane and often lengthy remarks made by men who in order to’ cover np their' lack of knowledge of th,© subject under discussion, resorted to platitud.es aild retailed them with relish. We have said in this column again and again that the type of men (for the most part) returned at the 1925 election was not a credit to the judgment ol the electors and deplored the lack of interest in the country's business by the people generally, which allowed such a. state of affairs to come about. But though the electors do not take politics toe seriously they have f>r’ ov ' ed they can arouse themselves when, occasion demands, and that they are not always misled by catch cries and irrelevancies often introduced to cloud the real issues. There was an unparalleled dismissal of many old hands in favour cl “new stuff”. Although some of the new material may prove disappointing when tested, several men , of remarkable! attainments have been returned, and the standard 3f this Parliament will be much higher than the last. For which heaven be praised! . ioAuAl
