REDUCTION PROPOSED. J LABOUR AMENDMENT LOST. LONDON, June 25. The Tit. Hon. Phillip Snowden (Labour) moved to reduce the petrol tax tor a penny per gallon in the House of Commons to-day, saying the! tax would fall heaviest on commercial vehicles, increase tho cost of distribution, and nullify the Benefits of the rate relief. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Winston Churchill, replied that) commercial motor-cars were virtually subsidised as compared with the railways as they were not bearing tho expense of damage done to roads. Tho tax burden on the industry was much! less at thaf rate. The amendment was negatived by 237 votes to 115.
