NORTH V. SOUTH

SELECTION GAME. NORTH WINS 21—14. Selected players from the North and South teams met in a hard, well-fought game at Victoria Park yesterday. There was a very large crowd ui spectators and the ground was in ■. vp'uut playing condition. The team were:

North (anther and black). —Morris, Hunt, Brown, Berry, Fookes, Owen, Morey, Kivell, Ogier, Smith, Williams O’Keefe, Walter, Wolfe and Bond.

South (old gold).—Whalen, '(Hohaia, Hammond, J. Crawford, Hunter, Mercer, Hi ley, A. Guy, Robinson, 0. Murphy, Baldwin, Ike, O’Rorke, Wills and Guy. Kivell opened for North, and Riley accurately accepted and returned the* ball. The South forwards carried on to North’s 25, where Hobaia attempted to open up the game, but the passing was weak. Kivell was playing nippily at the scrums. Brown kicked well down field and Walters smartly following up gave North the advantage. Prom a throw-in at South’s 25, Robinson and Riley combined i n a fast dribble to a scoring position, but Brown speedily raced across and snapped up the oval just avoiding a score. A penalty in North’s 25 saw Ike miss the goal. South were playing with good dash, and Brown was again called upon to save from a rush. Hohaia made a nice line run, but was well taken by Morris, Robinson also being well taken near the line. South were having the best of matters. t " !

Owen nippily relieved, but swinging across field the South winder, Crawford crossed the line at the corner, hut was sent back for offside. Brown punted and following up gave to Berry, but he was well taken by Mercer. Riley held on to the ball, and from the penalty Brown kicked at goal. The ball struck the post and glanced through.—North 3, South nil.

A fine dribble by Kivell drew cheers from *the spectators, but Whale n changed the venue with a strong kick to touch. Brown, Owen and Morey combined nicely and the passing movement was taken up by Fookes and Hunt, who was stopped, by Crawford just in, time to avert a score. Again the ball swung across the North backs, but the movement broke down at the corner where Whalen cleared. Morris, backed up nicely and poor. passing in the South backs lost them ground. Guy was next prominent in a fast run down the line, but punted too hard, and the ball went dead. Again South worked up the field and from close play at the corner Crawford cleverly cut through for a try, Ike missing the goal. Three all.

The South forwards were now getting more ot the ball, and their hacks were handling better. Berry made a fine kick and run which led' to hard play at South’s 25, where Walter was penalised for a wrong tackle. Wills and O’Rourke shone in a dribbling rush, but Walters got possession and side stepping Robinson gave the ball to Ogier, Wolfe, Kivell and*Hunt, who was pushed out at- the corner. From the throw-in, Kivell unmarked dived over the line. Brown just missed the goal. North 6, South 3.

A smart attack initiated by Kivell placed South in jeopardy near halfway. From a South forward rush Robinson got over for a try, but a 5 yard scrum was ordered for offside. A series of kicking exchanges ended in Mercer, Riley and Guy interpassing beautifully and the latter scored. Ike’s kick struck the post and went outside. South G, North G.

SOUTH DOMINATION. South now nominated the game until O’Keefe fended through and after a great run gave to Waiter at South's 25. A smart tackle by Mercer, and a kick to half-way was taken by Kivell and the ball,, passed to Owen, Brown and Berry who lost it and a chance to score. North were now working better and the halftime whistle sounded with South defending. Half-time score; South 6, North 6. So far Brown, Kivell, Wolfe, Wal-> ter and Fooke's were outstanding for North with Crawford, Riley, A. Guy, Baldwin and Robinson for the South. SECOND SPELL. The second half opened with tight play in North’s 25, Morey being twice smothered behind the pack. Owen broke through twice and temporarilycleared. Then Brown snapped up and beautiful inter passing with Fook-’ es saw them go straight through the South team for Fookes to score under the posts. Brown added the goal. Ld.:iL&l&i North 11, South 6.

Crawford was next conspicuous for South but Kivell got him and kicked back to half-way. A loose scrambling rush saw the South backs almost over. From a scrum on the lino Owen punted out and smartly following up held Hunter at half-way. (Hammond next led a South rush hut Morris proved safe and transferred play to the opposite quarter. Brown and Hookes initiated a pretty movement which broke down owing to Hunt not understanding the movement. Kivell, Owen and Wolfe were now showing up prominently. Wolfe and Walter next broke through ■to South’s 25 where Owen made a beautiful opening, from a pass by Morey and gave to Fookes to Brown who scored in a good position hut failed to add the goal. North 14, South 6. Guy and Riley were now showing up well for South with Baldwin fre-

quently conspicuous. For North Owen was going well and with Brown and Fookes made up a fine combination. Mercer missed the pass in North’s 25 and Kivell, Owen and Brown carried play to the other end where the latter from a cross kick picked up and dropped a pretty goal. North 18, South 6.

A great run by Hunt was countered by on 0 by Hohaia, and Guy securing was almost over, but Kivell collared him and cleared. Owen checked another rush made by Guy, Robinson and Riley and Brown next momentarily cleared. South were forcing the pace and from onu rush Guy got over in a crush, Ike missing the goal. North IS, South 9. Brown was working the North backs prettify. Hunt ,)v|tli a, strained leg and Carter (Stratford) went on. Murphy, Baldwin and O’Rourke led a powerful South forward rush which Morey .pluckily went down' to and play returned to halfway. South were now getting more of the ball. Fookes accepted a long kick from Riley and after a short tujj gave to Carter who amidst great .cheering cleared three opponents and scored.

Even play followed until from a great South rush at the last moment Ike shouldered his way over and scored against the posts. Guy added the goal and the game ended North'’ 21, South 14.
